What makes an activation worth lining up for?

From pop-ups to exclusive events, brand activations are dominating our social feeds. Here are some important factors to consider in planning an activation that leaves the right, lasting impression. – By Lara Watson

We often get asked about activations, and how brands can find new and engaging ways to directly interact with their target audiences. Investing in a brand-focused event can generate authentic, organic content and buzz, and in-person interactions can leave a lasting impression on consumers, influencers, and media.

At Harbinger, we have worked on many types of activations, from booths at major sporting events to pop-up flower markets, to campus food trucks during frosh week. Before deciding to move forward with an activation, there are many factors we take into consideration to ensure our clients’ primary objectives are met. These include:

  • Audience – Who is the target audience, what will resonate with them, and where can you find them? Whether you are targeting families, fitness enthusiasts, or any niche group, the target audience will help determine the right place and time for your brand to make an appearance.
  • Budget & ROI – What is the budget for the event, and what results are you looking to achieve? Depending on your goals — for example, social coverage and awareness vs. high-volume reach — the engagement tactics you’ll want to use will vary.
  • Design – What is your target audience’s aesthetic? A unique design, while remaining true to your own branding, is vital in drawing positive attention and driving social coverage of your activation.
  • Storytelling – What messaging do you want to convey? How much information you can get across relies on the amount of time your consumers are willing to spend at your activation.
  • Amplification – How are you going to increase engagement? Partnering with a local influencer, holding a media preview and a social media promotion are great options to consider.
  • Logistics – Consider the time of year that will maximize attendance with the audience you are targeting, and how you plan to staff your activation. Brand ambassadors can be a fantastic tool to share brand messaging in way that engages consumers.

It’s also important to consider the hero product or message you’re looking to promote, when evaluating whether or not activation is the right approach. If the product is too niche or exclusive, capturing enough of the right audience to justify activation investment can be challenging. In comparison, targeting a broad, high reach demographic can drive strong ROI, but recall can be a challenge if branding isn’t executed effectively and messaging is overly complex. Keeping the event focus simple and clear is essential to drive impact beyond that first-hand experience.

While activations can drive very positive attention, that’s not always the case. Consumers are getting used to seeing brand experiences pop up in their city, and breakthrough may be harder to achieve with so much competing activity. With a consumer base that is eager to participate, but holds high expectations on value-add and relevancy, an event that over-promises and under-delivers can quickly turn to an inauthentic and poor experience.  The risk?  Consumers will be quick to share negative comments and worse, lose faith and preference for a brand or product.

So, what should brands consider to drive positive experiences?

  • Engagement element – If giving away an additional item with a product, consider staff ability to keep up with demand, so the experience and quality of item or product are not compromised.
  • Staffing – Ensure staff can engage with consumers, so they feel acknowledged and included.
  • Long lines – Although lines are inevitable for popular activations, plan for an efficient flow for handing out samples/other items to avoid consumer frustration.

Consumers want to feel valued—especially when engaging with their favourite brand. Offering high-value items, including full-sized samples, and ensuring their experience is smooth and stress-free gives them a real opportunity to experience the product and build stronger brand affinity. Working with an on-site expert and aligning the event with a cultural moment or trend can help further capture attention and encourage deeper engagement.

Activations, when thoughtfully executed, can be a powerful driver of consumer engagement. They create memorable experiences, bring your brand to life in ways digital campaigns alone cannot, and allow consumers to connect directly with your products and values. When planned with the right considerations, they can significantly boost awareness, loyalty, trial, and long-term brand affinity.
