Potential new rules for front-of-pack labeling in Canada

Health Canada is proposing a mandatory symbol on the front of consumer packaged goods (CPG) for foods high in saturated fat, sugars, and/or sodium.

As part of the federal government, Health Canada is proposing a standardized, prominent warning symbol requirement on the front of packages of food containing high levels of sodium, sugars, and/or saturated fat. This front-of-package nutrition symbol for food CPG is meant to draw attention to these nutrients and help reduce excessive consumption. The proposed format specifications for the symbol would help ensure that it is easy to find and read.

The proposed front-of-pack labeling requirement would apply to businesses involved in the sale of pre-packaged food products to consumers in Canada. If implemented, the proposed mandatory symbol requirement could take effect as early as 2023 or 2024.
