About the Idea Bank

The Bank of Upper Canada Building, the oldest surviving bank building in Canada, was the Bank of Upper Canada's head office from 1827 to 1861.

During the 1837 rebellion, William Lyon Mackenzie and the Reformers marched down Yonge Street to attack this building and steal the gold stored within – unsuccessfully.

The building was actually abandoned and awaiting demolition when it suffered a serious fire in June 1978, but in 1979, the building was declared a National Historic Site, and careful reconstruction began in 1980, with much of the original woodwork salvaged and restored.

Harbinger moved into the building in May 2002, infusing it with new life and great ideas and giving it the new name The Idea Bank.
